in the old society, in the new society

The old society concentrated the maximum number of ways of life into the minimum of space and accepted, if it did not impose, the bizarre juxtapositon of the most widely different classes. The new society, on the contrary, provided each way of life with a confined space in which it was understood that the dominant features should be respected, and that each person had to resemble a conventional model, an ideal type, and never depart from it under pain of excommunication.
